Rains hit factories in Gujarat

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Aug. 9 Heavy rain lashed Gujarat crippling operations of manufacturing units in Saurasthra, Surat and Jamnagar.

The rains have affected Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd, Ambuja Cements and Essar Oil in Gujarat.

Aditya Birla Nuvo told the BSE here that, “Heavy rains in Saurashtra region of Gujarat had partially affected operations of company’s rayon division at Veraval. All the efforts are being made to bring the normalcy at the earliest.”

Flooding in Ambujanagar, Gujarat, brought Ambuja Cements production to a halt. The company had also informed the exchange here that rains in and around the plant area at Ambujanagar had resulted in a flood and that it had stopped work at the plants.

“Loss arising out of flood is being estimated, however, the same is fully covered under insurance,” the company said adding that all efforts were being made to restore normalcy at the earliest.

The reopening of Essar Oil Ltd refinery has also been delayed by three-four days. The company shut its refinery at Vadinar (Gujarat) for three weeks on July 18 to increase its capacity to 2.10 lakh barrels per day from 1.50 lakh bpd by October.

Essar reported that the “heavy rains and strong winds had delayed the start of crude processing by three-four days. The refinery could have reopened on Thursday, but was unable to berth its crude tanker due to the bad weather.”

Thirty-five of the 225 talukas of Gujarat received over 100 mm rainfall on Wednesday, with Talala in Junagadh recording 503 mm. The India Meteorological Department has forecast very heavy rains in south Gujarat and southern Saurashtra. “A well-marked low pressure is currently lying over north-west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Gujarat region which is likely to give continuous rainfall activity in state," the IMD said.

Low-lying areas in Narmada and Bharuch districts have been cautioned due to continuous rain in the catchment of the Narmada dam.
