Biocon to market Abraxis drug

Bangalore, Aug. 9

Biocon Ltd and US company Abraxis BioScience Inc have announced a licensing agreement for marketing breast cancer drug Abraxane in India. Biocon will also have the right to market the chemotherapy drug in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and a few other West Asian countries. It will pay royalties to Abraxis based on net sales of the drug, a release said. “Abraxane adds tremendous value to our innovation-led oncotherapeutics marketing str ategy. Biocon is committed to bringing new therapeutics through in-house and licensed products. Our partnership with Abraxis on multiple fronts is enabling us to realise this objective in an effective and expeditious manner,” said Ms Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon CMD. Abraxis last month sought permission from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to market Abraxane to treat breast cancer. The USFDA approved the injectable suspension of the drug — paclitaxel protein-bound particles — in January 2005.
