CMDA draft plan focuses on affordable housing

Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug. 10Social housing, planned development of Chennai peripheral areas, public transport, and intermodal integration will be some of the focus areas in the final version of the draft master plan, according to Mr Md Nasimuddin, Member Secretary, Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority.

The authority also plans to launch an online facility for plan approvals, he said at a seminar organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, on tax, regulation and financing in real estate. He said that the “draft master plan may be disappointing, but it is only a draft and not the final document, which would address all inputs.”

The CMDA would lay emphasis on social housing that would be affordable to the majority. It would focus on the peripheral areas for planned housing. Population density within Chennai was about 247 a hectare against 59 outside the metropolitan area beyond the corporation limits. The authority would permit multi-storeyed structures even in the areas outside the Chennai Corporation,he said.

Public transport, and facilities for commuters to use both rail and road transport by integrating various modes of transport would be created. The CMDA was planning to launch an online facility for plan approvals by the end of this month. The project would be in three phases, which when completed early next year would provide for online registration, be interactive, and let applicants track the status of their application.
