21-member Bharat Chamber team to visit Vietnam

A 21-member business delegation of Bharat Chamber of Commerce, representing a cross section of the Indian industry, is visiting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City from 12 to 18 of this month to explore the scope for establishing sustainable business relationships with Vietnamese industry and trade.

2-way partnership

Briefing newspersons here on Friday on the visit, which follows the recent visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Kolkata, Mr P.R. Agarwala, President of the Chamber, said the theme of the visit was “West Bengal: Vietnam – Empowering the alliance”.

He said it was also proposed to establish a two-way partnership between the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (at whose invitation the visit was taking place) and Bharat Chamber of Commerce to foster and channel business interests of West Bengal and Vietnam.

Transmission mechanism

Mr Agarwala said the delegation would also explore the possibilities of creating a suitable transmission mechanism through the Internet for not only having periodically updated information but also favourable conditions for enterprises to have direct exchanges, crossing the language barrier.

The industries represented in the delegation include information technology and IT infrastructure, iron and steel, metal packaging and secondary metal processing, silicon alloys, cement, power generation, PUF insulated boxes, PVC pipes, plastic packaging, mosquito repellant coils and real estate development.

Describing Vietnam as one of the top exporters of rice and pepper in the world, the BCC President said the country was also the second biggest exporter of coffee, third largest exporter of cashew and among the leading exporters of footwear and apparel in the world.

Key objective

Describing Vietnam as being among the top producers of high yielding hybrid variety of rice in the world, Mr Santosh Rungta, former president of the Chamber said one of the key objectives of the visit was to explore scope for bring the Vietnamese rice cultivation technology to West Bengal.

He said Vietnam, which had an adverse trade balance with India, has now removed many of the restrictions, and goods are now freely imported into and exported from Vietnam.
