Chennai Port to fund new MEPZ link road

T.E. Raja Simhan
M. Ramesh

Chennai, Aug. 10 The Chennai Port Trust will give Rs 3.3 crore to fund a 1-km road linking the Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) and the Chennai port, according to the Chairman, Mr K. Suresh.

Now trucks and container trailers have to touch Anna Salai within the city and take the by-pass to reach the port. But these vehicles are not allowed to enter the city between 8 am and 8 pm. The new road is expected to ease traffic congestion and movement of cargo.

The project involves constructing a road from the MEPZ to a section of the by-pass, which runs just a km away from the rear side the zone. The new road will save 7 km and allow trucks 24-hour access between the MEPZ and the port. The MEPZ is a nodal point for exports through the Chennai port. Every day 500-1,000 trucks travel between the zone and the port.
