Our Bureau
New Delhi, Aug. 10
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for placing a contract with the European company Arianespace for the launch of GSAT-8/INSAT-4G at a price not exceeding $67.5 million (about Rs 297 crore). The Cabinet approval also allows for an option of going in for an additional launch and the waiver of the bank guarantee requirements.
The Cabinet decision would facilitate the timely launch of GSAT-8/INSAT-4G during 2008-09. The launch would provide 18 high power Ku-band (DTH quality) transponders to the INSAT system along with the second Geo Stationary augmentation payload for the GPS and GEO augmented navigation system (Gagan).
This would facilitate a number of services in the field of navigation, telecommunications, television broadcasting and distribution, Ku-band VSAT, broadband services, digital video broadcast, rural area communications and distance education.
The Union Cabinet also gave its approval for opening of Indian embassies in Iceland, Guatemala, Niger and Mali and the opening of Consulate General of India office in Guangzhou (China).
