Compact Disc to set up Rs 50-cr animation studio at Kinfra park

“The studio will enable producers of animation films to do all production work under one roof.”

Sankar Radhakrishnan

Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 10 Compact Disc India Ltd (CDI) will set up an integrated animation studio in Thiruvananthapuram.

Mr Suresh Kumar, Chairman, CDI, told Business Line that the Chandigarh-based entertainment company will set up the studio in the animation and gaming special economic zone (SEZ) at the KINFRA Film and Video Park in Thiruvananthapura m. The company will invest over Rs 50 crore in setting up this facility.

The company’s Thiruvananthapuram studio, its fourth animation studio, will enable producers of animation films to do all production work under one roof, Mr Kumar said.

All production-related work, from developing the storyboard to developing the digital film format can also be done at the studio, he pointed out.

Global projects

According to Mr Kumar, the Thiruvananthapuram studio will work on animation projects for the company’s international clients.

The company, which has studios in Chennai, Singapore and Malaysia, is now working on projects worth $41 million for clients across the world, he added.

“We plan to do two or three international films every year in the Thiruvananthapuram studio,” he said.

Work on the studio, which will cover an area of 60,000 sq. ft, will commence in October and will be completed by the end of next year, he said.

However, the company expects to start operations in Thiruvananthapuram from leased premises by the end of September, he added.

While CDI eventually plans to have around 300 animators working in the Thiruvananthapuram studio, it will begin operations with around 30 people, Mr Kumar said.
