Mining & Quarrying States - Andhra Pradesh AP beach sand project opposed
Our Bureau Vizianagaram, Aug. 10 The proposal to set up a unit to extract ilmenite from beach sands in Poosapatirega or Bhogapuram mandals in Vizianagaram district is being opposed by fishermen as well as the public representatives of the area. The coastline in the two mandals of the district is 27 km and according to geologists it is rich in minerals. Fishermen apprehend that beach sand mining will affect the coastal environment and their livelihood. They have submitted a memorandum to the District Collector, Mr B. Kishore, to give up the proposal. The Collector has received instructions from the State Government to allot 769 hectares of land to Bothli Beach Sands Project in either of the mandals for the establishment of the unit. The fishermen have complained to the Collector that the company’s representatives have, of late, been conducting surveys in the two mandals. Land value
Mr M. Suryanarayana, General Secretary of the Rythu Sangham, has said that the land value in the two mandals would be close Rs 20-25 lakh per acre, as they were in the vicinity of Visakhapatnam city. Nearly, 30 per cent of the land was assigned in the past to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and “therefore it is highly unjust to take away land from the weaker sections and hand it over to a private company for a project which may have adverse environmental impact.” He said an agitation would be launched if the State Government did not reconsider proposal.
