‘Cotton prices may be stable on higher output, exports’

Coimbatore, Aug. 11 Huge spindle expansion during 2005 and 2006 has led to galloping raw cotton consumption among spinners in the country resulting in this year’s cotton season witnessing very low stock-to-use ratio of just 44 lakh bales, according to the Coimbatore Cotton Association (CCA).

But the higher anticipated cotton production in 2007-08 (October-September) season, marked by a rise in acreage, and increased cotton shipments in the new season, would impart stability to cotton prices, the CCA President, Mr Ashok D. Daga, said.

Addressing the 35th annual general meeting of the association recently, Mr Daga pointed out that the 2007-08 crop would be higher by 10 per cent with the trade projecting the crop size at 300-310 lakh bales as compared with 270 lakh bales during the current year. With Indian cotton being increasingly considered as being contamination free, a higher volume of export of raw cotton is anticipated in the coming season. The trade expects the country would, in 2007-08, be able to export 10 per cent higher compared with 55 lakh bales of cotton committed for export in the current year.

Mr Daga felt that the prevailing exchange rate, along with export incentive, would be favourable for cotton exports.

The CCA President said the new cotton crop progressed well with sowing complete in the northern region, comprising Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Acreage in Punjab and Rajasthan were up by 7 per cent and 25 per cent, while Haryana had reported 9 per cent crop area decline this time.

In Central India, Gujarat and Maharashtra had reported 5 per cent increase in cotton area this time while it is up by 8 per cent in Madhya Pradesh.
