Trading States - Maharashtra Plea to implement national policy for street vendors
Divya Trivedi Mumbai, Aug. 12 A trade body of Maharashtra on Thursday demanded the implementation of the National Policy for Urban Street Vendors 2004. In a meeting of vendors from across the State, the Vyapar Rozgar Suraksha Kriti Samiti stressed the need to implement the policy in the light of corporates entering the retail segment in a big way. “Of the five lakh vendors in the State, only 20,000 have got licences under the new regulation, whereas the others are doing business by paying Rs 15 each to the police, municipality and goons each day. A total of Rs 821 goes to the pockets of these persons every month,” said Mr Suresh Kapile, General Secretary, Kriti Samiti. The policy was framed according to the survey done by a task force set up in 2001 and guarantees social security along with identity card and license to operate in certain areas for the street hawkers. “The policy was framed with a view to treat the vendors in the same light as any other worker and provide him with provident fund, gratuity, etc like other workers of the Indian economy,” explained Mr Vinod Shetty, advocate, India FDI Watch. “It was decided that we will convene meetings in whole of Maharashtra, starting Nasik, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Solapur, gather wholesalers, retailers and vendors and call for a State-wide bandh, later this month,” informed Mr Kapile.
