New desalination plant to come up at Nemmeli

T.E. Raja Simhan

Chennai, Aug. 12 Tamil Nadu will set up a second desalination plant at Nemmeli, about 35 km south of the city, next year at an initial cost of around Rs 500 crore, according to the state Chief Secretary, Mr L.K. Tripathy.

The State Government is also considering a third plant in a southern district.

The location is yet to be finalised, he told Business Line on the sidelines of a seminar.

The Nemmeli plant will have a capacity to produce 100 million litres of potable water from seawater every day. A detailed project report will be prepared soon, he said.

The first desalination plant is coming up Kattupalli village, near Minjur on the northern outskirts, at a cost of Rs 500 crore.

In February, the foundation stone was laid for the 100 MLD plant, coming up under a public private partnership, to augment water supply to Chennai.

By June next the plant will start producing 15 MLD and by September the plant will have full production, he said at a conclave on ‘Urban and Rural Infrastructure for Inclusive Growth’ organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Tamil Nadu State Council).

Mr Tripathy said the Poonamallee High Road (National Highways 4 that connects Chennai and Bangalore) will become a six lane from the present four.

This will become a major industrial corridor with large units in places like Sriperumbudur, Sunguvarchatram, Wallajah, Vaniambadi and Krishnagiri.

This entire stretch needs to have a good infrastructure and ecosystem consisting of housing and shopping malls, he said.
