Poor demand at Coonoor tea sales

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor, Aug. 13

Prices declined by Rs 2 a kg on the average at sale no: 32 of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA), when a volume of 11.82 lakh kg was offered as the demand failed to prevail at high bids.

About 25 per cent of the offer, mostly the browner sorts, had to be withdrawn for want of bids.

The bottom level of Rs 31 a kg reached last week continued this week. A good volume was sold for Rs 31 to 34.

“Better medium CTC leaf teas sold at last levels, but medium sorts eased Rs 1 to 2 a kg. A fair amount of plainer teas could not be sold even when prices were shed. The range of brokens and fannings among orthodox leaf got poor demand and eased Rs 2 to 4 a kg. Flaky teas could be sold only when prices shed more. Fannings lost Rs 3 a kg. Clean secondary orthodox dusts lost Rs 2. The choppy varieties were absorbed when prices shed Rs 2 to 3,” an auctioneer told Business Line.

Buyers

Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Unilever Ltd bought better medium sorts. JV Gokal selected orthodox dusts.

On the export front, Pakistan continued to buy blacker smaller brokens and fannings for Rs 35 to 36 a kg. CIS shippers bought bolder grades for around Rs 36 to 37. There was no purchase for any other country.
