Hyderabad, Aug. 13 The Andhra Pradesh Government on Monday hinted at exploring the possibility of extending 30 per cent reservations in private sector enterprises.

The State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, said that the Government is evaluating this option and believes that all those enterprises which secure Government incentives may be asked to consider and extend reservations.

He said that the recent announcement by the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh to extend reservations to private sector is being examined. And the Government was exploring various options.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Dr Reddy said “we are in the process of collection of data. We believe that those companies which avail themselves of incentives could be asked to support these reservations.”

Dr Reddy said that the State was committed to extend four per cent reservations to Muslims, even though this was now faced with legal hurdles. “All hurdles will be crossed to ensure that we extend reservations to Muslims.”

Cloud seeding

Following a review meeting of the Rain Shadow Development Areas Department, the Chief Minister has cleared a proposal for taking up cloud seeding operations with an outlay of Rs 100 crore spread over a five year period.

Dr Reddy asked the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences and Weather Modification Technologies (CASWMT) of the Jawaharlal Technological University, entrusted with the task of overseeing the cloud seeding operations, to take up studies of cloud physics with the help of a separate aircraft.

It is understood that such an initiative would provide necessary data of the rain-bearing cloud guiding the seeding activity in the State. This data would be independent.

‘Study dry spells’

The Chief Minister suggested that the Centre take up a study of the dry spells experienced in some parts of the State by identifying rain shadow areas during the monsoons.
