Kerala Cabinet nod for new dam at Mullaperiyar
Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 14 The Kerala Cabinet approved on Tuesday a proposal to start preliminary work on a new dam at Mullaperiyar, about 1,300 metres downstream of the existing dam.
Announcing this, the Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons here that the new construction would come up at the site identified by the Central Water Commission way back in 1976.
The detailed project report was getting ready, the Chief Minister said and added that the construction would be taken up with whatever limited available resources available. The State would not wait endlessly for financial assistance from the Centre.
ONLY WAY OUT
The State Government is of the view that construction of a new dam is the only way out to settle a long-drawn dispute with Tamil Nadu over the ideal level of water to be maintained at the existing dam.
While Kerala has been demanding that the level should not go beyond 136 ft given the safety aspect of the century-old dam, Tamil Nadu has all along maintained that it be raised to 142 ft.
CENTRAL RELIEF
The Centre has sanctioned Rs 50 crore to the State from the National Calamity Contingency Fund for flood relief operations, the Chief Minister said.
The Government has received a communication to this effect on Tuesday. In this context, the Chief Minister added that he and his Cabinet colleagues would revisit a decision to stage protests in Delhi to highlight the Centre’s ‘neglect’ of the State’s legitimate demands on flood relief.
