Intel donates $60,000 for empowering women

To set up community info centres with Delhi NGO

L.N. Revathy

Coimbatore, Aug. 14 Intel Foundation has announced a special fund for women’s education and empowerment on India’s 60th Independence Anniversary.

The $60,000 donation is expected to be utilised over a period of two years through Digital Empowerment Foundation (DEF), a Delhi-based non-profit organisation.

The Intel Foundation President, Ms Brenda Musilli, said: “These funds will be dedicated to providing opportunities for women in remote, rural villages. Community Information Resource Centres (CIRCs) promoted by DEF would be launched to provide adequate training and support these women,” she said.

The Intel India President, Mr Frank Jones, while reaffirming the company’s commitment, said the donation marked the beginning of a campaign on ‘Empowering Lives’.

Intel India in collaboration with DEF plans to establish multiple CIRCs, which would work as support systems for women. “These CIRCs would be equipped with content and information. Such information would help women find solutions to the multiple problems that they face in the rural milieu,” he said.

“The intent is to develop skills and learning abilities in children and women by imparting soft skills training, English language and computer literacy, subject-based learning using ICT tools (such as CDs/DVDs), training on household enterprises and ICT-based rural enterprises. This project aims to develop women and their families to become local rural ICT entrepreneurs,” Mr Jones said.
