Our Bureau
New Delhi, Aug 14 The Minister of State in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Dinsha Patel, today said that the country is likely to import 1.73 million tonnes (mt) of LPG during the current fiscal.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister said that domestic production of LPG by oil companies, both private and public, during 2006-07 stood at 8.454 mt against demand of 9.75 mt.
The country imported 2.288 mt of LPG in 2006-07, down from 2.883 mt in the previous fiscal. For 2008-09, imports have been put at 1.55 mt.
The LPG deficit will reduce to 100,000 tonnes by 2011-12 from 2.288 mt in 2006-07, he added.
“In order to reduce the import, domestic production is sought to be increased through refinery expansion or modernisation plans, implementation of LPG maximisation project and enhanced capacity utilisation, as also supply of piped natural gas.”
Meanwhile, ONGC is exploring the feasibility of setting up a well-head refinery in Rajasthan, for which it has undertaken due diligence.
Mr Patel said: “ONGC has informed that fiscal incentives of the order of Rs 1,300 crore a year for 15 years would be needed to make the 7.5-mt-per-annum project viable.”
The matter is being discussed between ONGC and the Rajasthan Government, he added.
ONGC is continuing optimisation studies for improving techno-commercial viability of refinery, the Minister said.
