Outlook Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports ‘Coffee exports to top Rs 2,000 cr by 2010’
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 15 Country’s earnings through coffee exports are likely to reach Rs 2,000 crore by 2010 from current level of Rs 1,650 crore with the export quantity exceeding five lakh tonnes from current level of 3.3 lakh tonnes, according to industry chamber, Assocham. This would be possible as domestic coffee producers would be laying higher emphasis on exports on account of favourable realisation on international coffee prices. Exports
More than 80 per cent of domestic coffee production would be exported by 2010, according to the chamber. The export would also grow because of rising demands from countries such as Italy, Russian Federation and Germany. Even Belgium is emerging as one of the largest importers of Indian coffee. The production of coffee in Karnataka would grow by 10 times by 2010 as the State’s farmers would be sowing coffee plants in larger acreage’s and the same would be case in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, according to the chamber. Out of 1,78,308 coffee holdings in the country, as many as 28,000 are not in a position to repay bank loans. Hence, the Government should come out with a relief package for them, according to the chamber.
