Rs 7-crore textile hub coming up in Bellary dist

S. Shanker

Mumbai, Aug. 15 The Karnataka Department of Industries Centre, JSW Steel Ltd and a jean and denim trouser manufacturer, Bafna Hi Fashions, are to establish a Rs 7-crore textile hub at Toranagallu, Bellary district, Karnataka.

The Government agency will provide technical and financial assistance and the steel-maker the land and infrastructure. The apparel maker will shoulder the responsibility of training, production and marketing.

The hub will turn into a specialised training centre when more aspirants queue up before the facility. Bellary district as such is a centre for apparel making.

About 200 single needle machines along with specialised machines, capable of stitching 2,000 pieces a day, are to be procured in the initial phase of the endeavour.

JSW and the business partner will meet the working capital needs, apart from which the company has agreed to provide a 10,000 sq ft building close to its 8,000-acre campus.

The trainees will be from about 25 villages bordering the township. A nine month training schedule has been drawn up during which the rural folk will get Rs 300 an honorarium for the first three months while working on the single needle machines.

On elevation, they would be paid Rs 1,250 per month by the District Industries Centre for the next six months. “Then on the payment will be on piece rate output,” a senior JSW official said.

With the objective of empowering the women, future plans include creating satellite centres and the women purchasing sewing machines with financial assistance. A minimum of 30 women from a particular village or cluster will be identified and roped in so that after training they can function collectively as a satellite unit.

Six gram-panchayats in Sandur taluk – Toranagallu, Kurekuppa, Vaddu, Taranagara, Daroji and Doddantapura, which include about 20 revenue villages, and one gram panchayat in Hospet Taluk, namely Gadiganur, covering 3 villages are to get priority in the scheme.
