Education Government - States Give priority to education, Manmohan tells States
Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 15 The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday asked the States to give priority to education, stating that this (education) alone was the foundation on which a progressive and prosperous society could be built. “Growing revenue earnings have improved the fiscal capacity of the States, they must now give priority to education,” Dr Singh said in his address on the occasion of the 60th Independence Day here on Wednesday. He highlighted that Centre has shown its commitment in this regard by tripling public spending on education in the last three years. The Government was committed to universalising secondary education. And that an extensive programme for this was being finalised. Besides supporting 6,000 new high quality schools, Dr Singh said the Centre would help States set up colleges in 370 districts, where the enrolment levels were low. Dr Singh announced that the Centre would set up 30 new Central Universities and that every State that did not have a Central University will now have one. More institutes
To promote science and professional education, Dr Singh said the Centre would set up five new Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, eight new Indian Institutes of Technology, seven new Indian institutes of Management and 20 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology.
