Mangalore, Aug. 16 After successful training of 173 persons in stone carving and woodcarving, the Canara Bank-sponsored C.E. Kamath Institute for Rural Artisans is now planning to provide training in two more areas in its new campus at Miyyar in Karkala taluk of Udupi district.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, Mr M.M. Kudva, Deputy General Manager, Canara Bank, Mangalore Circle, said that the institute — which was set up in 1997 at Kariya Kallu near Karkala to mark the 90th anniversary of the bank — has trained 173 artisans in 18 batches till now. Of them, more than 150 are self-employed, Mr Kudva said.

Stating that the institute imparts training in the ‘gurukula’ method, he said: “Plans are afoot to provide training in pottery and metal carvings at the new campus of the institute.”

He said that Mr M.B.N. Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of the bank, will inaugurate the new campus of the institute on August 18. Mr M. Veerappa Moily, Chairman of the Central Administrative Reforms Commission, will be the chief guest on the occasion.

At present, students in the age group between 18 and 25 years, with academic background of 7th standard to 10th standard, are given 18-month training in stone carving and woodcarving at the institute.

During the centenary year of the bank, it was decided to upgrade the facilities to national standards and build up an infrastructure to cater to the large number of aspirants. Accordingly, the bank bought four-acre plot at Miyyar near Karkala and set up a campus at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore, he said. In its self-employment initiatives and development of rural infrastructure and grooming rural talents, the bank has undertaken various projects. It has set up artisans’ training institutes at Jogaradoddi near Bangalore, Miyyar near Karkala and Karaikudi near Madurai, he added.
