Environment Money & Banking - RBI & Other Central Banks States - Tamil Nadu RBI does a mop-up at Marina!
N.S. Vageesh Chennai, Aug. 16 It was a different kind of sterilisation. It was a different kind of mopping-up operation by these central bankers. Only this time, it was not money – clean or otherwise. It was a clean up of a portion of the famous Marina Beach, by nearly 200 officers from the Reserve Bank of India, Chennai. This white sandy beach, said to be the second longest stretch in the world, is often littered with paper, plastic covers, eatables, broken bottles and other garbage strewn across by its unthinking citizenry. Cleaning campaign
The RBI officers and staff, accompanied by their families, took part in a cleaning campaign as part of the activities held in connection with the 60th anniversary of the Independence Day. This community service project, the first of its kind by an institution not particularly known for reaching out, kicked off at 4 p.m. on August 15. For the next one-and-a-half hours, there was a systematic effort at collecting the litter in disposable bags. Enough garbage was collected to fill up a two-tonne truck of the Corporation of Chennai. Team spirit
Mr F.R. Joseph, Regional Director, RBI, said that the exercise was aimed at increasing the interface between the bank and the general public. It also helped create a sense of bonding and team spirit among officers besides participation in community development. He was happy that the objective of “selling RBI within” had been achieved, he said. An enjoyable sunny evening, breathing the beach air – (on duty!) –concluded with a street play on financial inclusion.
