HAL, CAE setting up simulation school

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Aug. 16 Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is investing in a Rs 200-crore joint-venture helicopter flight simulation training school in Bangalore — the first in the country.

A shareholders’ agreement is due to be signed in September with its equal partner, Canadian flight simulator company CAE, and the school is expected to become operational a year from then, HAL’s CEO, Mr A.K. Baweja, said at a news conference here.

Ro-ro School

The school is to come up on a 3-acre plot belonging to HAL and employ about 25 trainers to start with. The school will be named as ‘HATS Off’ (Helicopter Academy for Testing by Simulation Offline) and it will have an advanced ro- ro (roll on-roll-off) set-up catering to mainly trainees on HAL’s own ALH copters and offer turnkey training on other military and civil copters.

It is touted to be the third such ro-ro school in the world offering level D helicopter FAA certification, according to HAL Helicopter Test Pilot Wing Cdr C.D. Upadhayay.

He said simulation training, compared with training on actual aircraft, would be a third of the cost of actual flying in terms of fuel, aircraft attrition, spares, accidents and inspection among others. It would yet be a perfect learning platform for all real, wartime and emergency situations.

Simulation training costs could range from $1200-1400 an hour, with trainees having to put in over 16 hours.

The copter training market is looking up, they said. CAE recently acquired Bangalore simulation design company Macmet Technologies Ltd for about $4.8 million.
