Mumbai, Aug 16

The Navi Mumbai police on Thursday had to resort to lathi charge and burst tear gas shells to suppress violence by the Shiv Sena party members, who were protesting against the setting up of the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Maha Mumbai SEZ.

The party also protested by undertaking ‘Jail Bharo Andolan’, in which the former Chief Minister and senior party leader, Mr Manohar Joshi, courted arrest.

According to a senior police officer, the trouble started in the morning when about 10,000 Shiv Sena members tried to enter the Konkan Bhavan and revenue offices in the vicinity. The police barred their entry, which led to the violence. The protesters stoned vehicles and damaged public property. More than 43 protesters have been arrested and 30 policemen have also been injured in the violence. Condition of two policemen is in serious condition, he said.

The Shiv Sena workers also threw stones at vehicles parked inside the CIDCO Bhavan premises, damaging over 80 vehicles, seven buses of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport Corporation was also damaged.

The Shiv Sena has alleged that the Maharashtra Government is forcibly acquiring the land for the SEZ from poor farmers.
