Strategy Donear set to foray into economy garment retailing
Our Bureau Bangalore, Aug. 16 Donear Industries Ltd is set to enter garment retailing in the economy segment. It plans to set up 200 exclusive brand outlets in the country by 2008-end; the first three outlets will come up in Mumbai around Deepawali this year. “These discount stores under a new brand name will predominantly sell garments, apart from lifestyle products such as shoes and sunglasses. We will primarily target class B cities,” said Mr Debashis Poddar, CEO. He was speaking to newspersons in connection with the three-day Fabrics and Accessories Trade Show that begins tomorrow. (The company is one of the participants.) Donear, a manufacturer of suiting, shirting and trouser fabric, has set up an integrated plant at Bardoli, Surat at an investment of Rs 200 crore. The 20-acre plant will engage in processes such as yarn dyeing, fabric dyeing, finishing and garmenting. It will produce premium high-value cotton shirting and bottom weights of about 0.8 million m a month, taking the group’s total production capacity to 25 million m a year. Production will be taken up in a phased manner. While yarn dyeing and weaving have begun, garment manufacturing will start by December. The company has two other units in Silvassa. Exports account for 15 per cent of the company’s Rs 160-crore turnover, with the bulk coming from the domestic market through fabric supply to domestic companies and over-the-counter sales.
