Titanium project

This refers to the proposed Tata Steel’s titanium project in Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu and the ongoing stir against it. The Rs 2, 500-crore project proposes to use the minerals available in the districts of Tuticorin and Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu to make titanium dioxide, which is a key ingredient for the paint industry.

But, unfortunately, the project is now at the crossroads amid the protests of local political heavyweights and land-owners.

Interestingly, the Tamil Nadu Government has recently kick-started a campaign to invite and register public opinions about the project, which is really a good step. At the same time, the State Government should be ready to give competitive prices to the land-owners because it is the same land acquisition problem that stalled the same project way back in 2002.
