Building slums itself seems to be a business in many metros and big cities. Unless a line is drawn somewhere, “Building solutions out of slums” (Business Line, August 18) will be a never-ending process. Along with any pr oject to clear existing slums, action should be initiated to prevent squatters from taking over unused land and creating more slums.

The time is right to implement the PURA concept, as suggested by former President, Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, and expanded on by several thinkers and planners. Improving transport facilities is another means of reducing urban shanty-towns.
