Bangalore, Aug. 19 The Manipal group has deepened its presence in the stem cells area by launching the Manipal Institute of Regenerative Medicine (MIRM), said to be the first in the country.

MIRM, located in Bangalore, will function under the Manipal University and is headed by its Director, Dr Satish Totey.

Thirty students have enrolled in the first batch, a release from the group said.

MSc programme

Its two-year M.Sc. programme, also considered the first in Asia-Pacific, will provide India with the first batch of trained stem cell biologists.

The centre will facilitate breakthrough research in stem cells and tissue engineering and emerge as a leading centre in the field, the group said.

“Regenerative medicine shows enormous potential economically and there is a global demand for specific multidisciplinary training in this area,” the release said.

Research arm

The group already has a commercial stem cell R&D arm, Stempeutics Research Pvt Ltd, which will offer students the industrial support, said Mr B.N. Manohar, President of Stempeutics.

A Malaysia branch is to be started in three months.

Faculty from US

MIRM will have its faculty from India and the US.

The centre was inaugurated on Saturday by Dr H.S. Ballal, Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University, in the presence of Dr Ranjan Pai, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Manipal Education and Medical Group, and Dr Raj Warrier, Vice-Chancellor, Manipal University.
