Thiruvananthapuram, Aug. 19 Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd, which operates a chain of cinema theatres in the country, is looking at entering foreign markets.

The company, which is already present in Malaysia through a joint-venture, is looking at entering Singapore and West Asia, said Mr P. S. Saminathan, Managing Director, Pyramid Saimira Theatre Ltd. It is also looking at the possibility of entering the North American market, he stated at a press conference here.

The company has announced its entry into Kerala. The company has already leased 17 theatres in the State and plans to have 150 screens in Kerala by this year-end, Mr Saminathan said. All the theatres in Kerala will start operations on October 12, he added.

Rather than build new theatres, the company’s strategy is to lease existing theatres and improve the infrastructure in each theatre, he explained. In Kerala, the company has so far leased theatres in 13 locations including Thiruvananthapuarm, Alappuzha and Kannur. Discussions are on with theatre owners in Kochi, Kozhikode and Thrissur for leasing, he said. The company will initially invest around Rs 30 crore in its Kerala operations, he added.

Simultaneously, Pyramid Saimira is also entering the Malayalam film production business. It is looking at producing 10 films every year and will also buy several other Malayalam films. It has already started acquiring distribution rights for Malayalam films, he added.

Biometric system

The company, which currently manages over 370 screens in India, is also working on a biometric card-based scheme that allows people to see several films every month.

Customers can join the scheme by paying a monthly subscription of Rs 100, he explained. Those who subscribe to the scheme can then use their biometric card to access any of its theatres in a particular city and watch any film, he added.
