Missing skills

This is with reference to the article “Towards a clean public life” (Business Line, August 17). Electronic voting and computerisation of the railway reservations is a new development in the IT field for which India is in the limelight by default and not by design. It is rather the effect of globalisation. There are two factors of vital importance to drive any nation forward towards true progress and prosperity. They are patriotism and concern for fellow-beings. Both factors are sadly missing in this great nation. Previously the ambition that parents nurtured was to get their children into the Civil Services, so that they can get rich quick. Now, thanks to globalisation, other options are available. At present, most of our young people’s efforts are focussed on going abroad and working for a foreign country. Where is the sense of patriotism for this great country? Many even speak ill of our country to the foreigners they meet to impress them. In this respect, we Indians are different from the Chinese. The Chinese love their country. The technical colleges train students in “soft-skills” to enable them to work for American companies. Why doesn’t this training include an orientation in patriotism? Patriotism is the driving force of the progress of any nation. Railway reservations and voting machines cannot replace human nature and sentiments; what is needed is change in attitude. But, perhaps, this is a pipe dream that will never be realised.
