New Projects Exide has no plans for new units
Our Bureau Hyderabad, Aug. 21 Exide India plans to invest Rs 100 crore on expansion, modernisation and quality upgrade initiatives across eight plants, including six for batteries. The company is in the process of expanding capacities for batteries from 6 million units to 7.5 million units. It commands 80 per cent share in the OEM market and 75 per cent in the replacement segment in the organised sector. The Director Sales of the company, Mr P.K. Kataky, told newspersons here today that Exide is looking at diversification and other opportunities. Asked about new plants, he said the company has the capability to expand existing plants and therefore has no plans for new ones now. On increasing competition in the automotive sector, he said: “We welcome competition. It helps us improve our product. We are not focusing on the export market now, since the domestic market demands across segments is very high”. Referring to the solar water heating systems which were launched today, Mr Kataky said the usage of water heaters and non-conventional energy which was quite low in India was poised to grow significantly. On the advantages, he said a 100-litre solar water heater which costs around Rs 17,000 can replace a geyser for residential use and save up to 1,500 units annually. It would also help in reduction of 1.5 tonnes of carbondioxide per annum.
