Our Bureau New Delhi, Aug. 21 Officers of public sector oil companies have called off their indefinite strike after the Government agreed to their demands and offered a higher interim relief in lieu of delay in revising their wages, thus, avoiding any serious impact on production, refining, aviation refuelling, as well as retailing of petroleum products. About 45,000 officers belonging to oil companies like Indian Oil Corporation, ONGC, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation and Bharat Petroleum Corporation began their indefinite strike from 0600 hours on Tuesday. The officers were seeking merger of 50 per cent dearness allowance with basic pay, release of ad-hoc payment and withdrawal of tax on perquisites like company-provided accommodation. The strike was called off within four hours. According to Oil Sector Officers Association (OSOA) after their meeting with the Petroleum Minister, Mr Murli Deora, the Minister has agreed on higher interim relief for the period from January 1, 2007, when wage revision was due. The Petroleum Ministry had accepted their demand for giving an interim relief of Rs 60,000-1,20,000 per employee. On Monday evening, the Ministry had proposed Rs 50,000- Rs 1,00,000 interim payment which was rejected by OSOA. In September 2006, the same oil workers’ union called a strike, but called it off after the Government promised to look into their demands for higher wages. In a statement issued here, the Petroleum Minister said, that the Government was always sympathetic to the genuine demands of officers and employees of the public sector in general and oil sector in particular.
