Cairn hopeful of producing oil from Rajasthan in 30 months

A 585-km pipeline is to be jointly laid by Cairn and ONGC

Our Bureau

Chennai, Aug 22 Now that the issue of laying the pipeline for evacuating the crude oil from the Barmer field in Rajasthan is practically resolved, Cairn India is hopeful of producing the first barrel of oil from the field in two-and-a-half years from now.

The 585-km $700 million (Rs 2,800 crore) pipeline is proposed to be jointly laid by Cairn and ONGC. The proposal awaits the formal approval of the Government.

When the pipeline is laid, it will be the first of its kind in the country, said Mr P. Elango, Director-Strategy and Head-Producing Assets, Cairn India. Right down the pipeline, there will be 30 mini power projects, each 1 MW in size, producing power from another natural gas from a twin pipeline. The power would be used for heating up the waxy crude, enabling its flow, he said.

Mr Elango was here in connection with a road safety initiative in collaboration with the Chennai police. Cairn today handed over a safety propaganda bus to Mr Sunil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police, Chennai Traffic Police.

Micro vendor development

Cairn’s officials told Business Line that the company intended to replicate its ‘micro vendor development’ programme in Rajasthan also. Small businesses in the neighbourhood of Cairn’s operations will be enco uraged to supply to Cairn as much as possible. This model was put in place in Andhra Pradesh, where Cairn operates the Ravva offshore oil field.

The micro vendor programme there has created contracts worth $635,000 (Rs 2.6 crore) for local small businesses.
