New Delhi, Aug. 22 The Minister for Communications & IT, Mr A. Raja, on Wednesday launched an Export Promotion Forum, an industry initiative to make India a hub for telecom equipment manufacturing and export.

“It was a long pending demand of the industry and the Government is happy to see it coming through. The public-private participation in the growth process is quite visible in the telecom sector and the Government has set an export target of $10 billion in the next few years,” Mr Raja said.

“By the year 2012, we have projected a target of 650 million subscribers, for which we will require telecom equipment of an order of $84 billion. Of this, equipment worth about $75 billion is expected to be manufactured in the country itself,” he said.

Speaking on the sidelines of the seminar organised by the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association, the Minister said that the spectrum policy for mobile operators would be announced before the end of this year.
