Mangalore, Aug. 22 The Karnataka Government will begin work on dredging of fisheries harbours in the State soon and tenders will be called for this in a few days, according to Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, Karnataka Minister for Fisheries and Religious Endowment.

Addressing the members of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) here, Mr Shetty said the State Government has already earmarked Rs 5 crore in the budget for dredging of fisheries harbours, and it expects the Centre to contribute an equal amount.

The State Government will float tenders by the month-end, and dredging work will begin by September or October, he said.

There has been a great demand for dredging of fisheries harbours in the State. Numerous accidents have taken place near the fisheries harbours in the past few years due to lack of dredging, he said.

Mr Shetty said the State Government wants to buy a dredger for its own use. Tender has been called for in this regard, he said.

The Government will also take up work on the third phase of the fisheries harbour in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 30 crore, and fisheries harbour at Malpe in Udupi district at a cost of Rs 35 crore.

The Karnataka Minister for Ports, PWD and Power, Mr H.D. Revanna, will inaugurate the renovated fisheries harbour at Gangolli on August 24. The harbour has been renovated at a cost of Rs 8 crore. Foundation stone for a fisheries harbour, to be built at a cost of Rs 2.25 crore, will also be laid soon, he said.
