Squeezed out
Creating chaos seems to come easy to Indians. Scribes in the capital anxiously waiting for the joint press conference by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart, Shinzo Abe, were first seated by External Affairs officials on the three rows of chairs placed before the head table. Soon the Special Protection Group (SPG) arrived on the scene and wanted two rows of chairs to be removed for “security reasons”. Consequently, the journalists wer
e now squeezed into one last row, but not for long. Senior Foreign Ministry officials came into the hall and ordered the chairs to be placed back. The SPG protested and some argument later, a few of the removed chairs came back. Obviously, there were not enough seats for both the Indian and Japanese media so the Indians were told to squeeze themselves at the back, the operative word being “keep adjusting, keep adjusting”.
Incidentally, seating seemed to be a problem at almost every venue the Japanese Prime Minister visited. At two earlier functions on Wednesday, Indian scribes proceeding towards seats marked ‘media’ were stopped in their tracks and told the seats were meant for the Japanese media delegation accompanying the Prime Minister.
