AP raises wind power tariff

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Aug. 23 Andhra Pradesh has decided to raise the tariff for power produced through wind to Rs 3.10 per unit. The AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) has allowed tariff up to Rs 3.37 per unit.

While the installed capacity of power in the State is 107 MW, the distribution companies (Discoms) are paying only Rs 2.70 per unit, according to an official press release here today.

The State Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who examined the prevailing rates in other States felt that most of them offer much higher tariff for renewable energy and it was prudent for Andhra Pradesh to raise prices.

With the hike in tariff, wind power capacity addition may go up to 1,000 MW, the Chief Minister hoped. There are 32 potential locations identified so far in the State for setting up wind projects. Reviewing the power situation in the State, Dr Reddy asked AP Genco to speed up its own projects and insist private power producing units to accelerate their units.

Nod for BHEL proposal

He okayed the proposal of BHEL for an integrated coal gasification combined cycle power project of 125 MW at the Vijayawada Thermal Power Station. It would be the first of its kind in the country.

AP Genco has been asked to go ahead with the MoUs with BHEL, which would fund the coal gassifier, while Genco would meet the cost of the power plant.

Dr Reddy said he would write to the Union Heavy Industries Minister, Mr Santosh Mohan Dev, to speed up the supply of turbines from BHEL to advance the power projects in the State.

Atleast 15 new projects have been taken up by APGenco during the last three years with a total capacity of 7,713 MW.
