Max Hypermarkets signs licence pact with Spar International

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Aug. 23 Max Hypermarkets India Pvt Ltd has signed a licence agreement with the Netherlands-based Spar International for opening SPAR branded hypermarkets and supermarkets across India.

Spar will provide expertise, knowledge transfer and rights to the brand while Max will manage the finances and operations.

“We believe this model is best suited to meet the needs of our customers and to develop a sustainable hypermarket format in India,” Mr Viney Singh, Managing Director, Max Hypermarkets, said.

The group plans to launch its first hypermarket and supermarket in Bangalore in September this year. In the first phase of the launch, the company would invest about Rs 200 crore and open seven new stores in the next two years.

The SPAR hypermarket format intends to offer value retailing experience to customers and ‘make shopping affordable for families,’ Mr Singh said.

SPAR International is one of the largest food retailing chains globally operating in 33 countries in different formats. Dr Gordon Campbell, Managing Director, SPAR International, called this an ‘important and exciting development.’ “Developing SPAR hypermarkets in India is a key element in our strategic plan,” he said.

Mr Micky Jagtiani, Chairman of the Landmark Group, said that this association would help the Group to bring in international standards and operations on par with the rest of the food retailers globally.”
