Chennai, Aug. 23 IBM plans to expand its operations to Tier II cities for software development and is exploring Coimbatore as one of the destinations.

The company has a sales office there, according to Mr Shanker Annaswamy, Managing Director, IBM India Pvt Ltd.

At present, IBM is present in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata and the NCR (North Capital Region) comprising Delhi, Noida and Gurugaon, he told newspersons.

The company expanded its operations in Chennai with the inauguration of a new global delivery centre, which has a capacity to accommodate around 2,500 employees. The 3-lakh sq ft centre at the DLF IT Park is IBM’s sixth global delivery location in India, and key to its global integrated network spread across three dozen countries, he said.

Mr Annaswamy did not give the size of investment and the number of employees.

To begin with, the centre will have around 100 employees, and IBM will offer its infrastructure services to global clients from the facility, says a company press release.

As of December 2006, IBM had 53,000 employees in India spread across 35 centres.

These include IBM Innovation Centre for Business Partners in Bangalore and the IBM Research Lab in Delhi.
