The biodiversity of island fishes in Kuttanadu is on a gradual decline owing to a combination of human interventions such as high dosage of chemical fertilisers and pesticides in paddy fields, reclamation of water bodies, encroachment on canals and rivers for road and culvert construction, and making of barrages for intensive rice cultivation and infrastructure development.
