‘Don’t delay formation of Salem Railway Division’

Coimbatore, Aug. 24

The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC), has sought the State’s intervention for the formation of the Salem railway division at the earliest.

It has expressed dismay over the statement of the Union Railway Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, that the decision on the new division’s formation would have to await the outcome of a meeting between the Chief Ministers’ of the two states — Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

The ICCIC President, Mr D. Balasundaram, in a statement, said the business community of Coimbatore region was firm in its stand that the region should form a part of the Salem division and no change should be made with regard to the jurisdiction.

He said the “Palakkad division of the Railways has been neglecting the Coimbatore region in the past”, and the delay in the execution of the Coimbatore-Irugur track doubling, the construction of the over bridge at Ukkadam and the gauge conversion of Podanur-Dindigul line were indicators of the apathy shown by the Palakkad division.

Mr Balasundaram appealed to the Tamil Nadu Government and the MPs from the State to take up the issue immediately with the Centre and ensure that the Salem railway division is inaugurated as planned earlier on September 14.
