Tourism States - West Bengal Reaching back
Job Charnock’s halt: A view of the erstwhile Bengal Council Chamber, at the west end of Writers’ Buildings, which was built by Sir Ashley Eden, Lt-Gov of Bengal from 1877 to 1882. The octagonal structure is built on the site of St Anne’s Church, the first church of the English settlement which overlooked the old Fort William to the west, on the bank of the river. The church - which was destroyed during the seige of the fort by the forces of Shiraj-ud-daulah in 1756 - was consecrated in 1709, a mere 19 years after Job Charnock halted in Sutanati on August 24, 1690, in a manner of speaking heralding the birth of the English presence in Calcutta which (in a formal sense) lasted till August 15, 1947.
