Outlook Apotex has big plans for Bangalore R&D unit
Our Bureau Mangalore, Aug. 25 The Canada-based Apotex Pharmachem Inc, which has operations at Bangalore, is planning to make the unit as the largest R&D (research and development) centre outside Canada. In this regard, it is planning to recruit nearly 150 people in the next six months, in addition to around 100 people already working there. In an informal chat with Business Line on the sidelines of Prof B.S. Holla Endowment Lecture at Mangalore University here on Saturday, Dr K.S. Keshava Murthy, President of Apotex Pharmachem Inc, Canada, said that Apotex Pharmachem I ndia Pvt Ltd would have 250 people in the next six months. The company undertakes R&D activities focused mainly on process verification and development of APIs (active pharmaceutical ingredients). The technology developed here can be transferred to other Indian contract manufacturing sites for the manufacture of select APIs. Pharma business
Earlier delivering the endowment lecture on the topic ‘From molecule to market: A chemist’s journey in global pharmaceutical business’, Dr Murthy said global growth of pharma industry opens up opportunities for science and engineering graduates in a big way. Global pharmaceutical business is estimated at $550 billion, and India and China will become the prominent markets for the industry in the coming years, he said.
