Optimising routes

This refers to the news item on “Total cargo handled goes up 16%” (Business Line, August 25). It is amazing to note that the distance between Hassan and Mangalore has come down to 260 km and freight is pegged at Rs 229 f rom Rs 727 per tonne. This is certainly a shot in the arm for trade and industry.

No doubt, the Railways has a vital role to play in the development of economy, especially in the post-reform era, where business has become global phenomenon. But the majority of current trunk routes in India were designed and developed in the pre-Independence era. In the post-reforms situation, the Railways has a tremendous to help trade and industry meet global challenges in terms of volumes and cost as well.

Taking a cue from the above, the Railways, as a short-term measure, should review all routes connecting major destinations and should give top priority to developing and building lines that will shorten the distance between two major destinations, as this has major advantages. To highlight some, the Railways, which is major energy consumer, will also become a major energy saver.

Such practices will enable it to put its rolling stock to best use and shorten the turnaround time, simultaneously. As the Railways also plays a major role in generation of wealth in the economy, it will help in boosting economic development also. Optimising routes will help trade and industry become cost-competitive in the post-reforms global business environment.

The Railways should use a part of the current surpluses for the above purpose and also, if necessary, invite private participation.
