Shipping Industry & Economy - Environment Containers with bamboo floors
Green line: CMA CGM, by switching to bamboo, has saved a huge amount of tropical wood.
Shipping is one of the least polluting means of transportation and it pollutes even less when practised in strict conformity with environment protection norms. CMA CGM, the France’s number one shipping line claims, was the first shipping group to use containers with bamboo floors called bamboo eco-containers, as part of “commitment to environmental protection”. As the timber that is conventionally used was becoming rare, the shipping line — in order to prove that it did not participate in deforestation — started using bamboo. In 2005, the eco-container fleet totalled 400 TEUs; one year later, thanks to positive customer response and strong technical performance of these containers, the fleet size swelled to 7,000 TEUs. The French shipping group now confirms the delivery of additional 30,000 TEUs, increasing the fleet to 37,000 TEUs. The effort, according to the shipping line, has already yielded savings of 10,000 cubic metres of tropical wood. OUR BUREAU
