Hyderabad, Aug. 26 The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has requested the Maharashtra Government to release about 15 tmc of water from the Jaikwadi project, located in the upper Godavari basin, to meet the drinking water needs of parts of Andhra Pradesh.

In a letter addressed to his counterpart, Mr Vilasrao Deshmukh, Dr Reddy mentioned that many villages in the Godavari basin were facing acute drinking water shortage. In order to tide over the situation, the State Government has given top priority to drinking water supplies and this move will be beneficial to residents in Andhra Pradesh.

Though the State has experienced good and widespread rains due to south-west monsoons, the reservoirs in the Godavari basin have not received the expected inflows from upper reaches.

In the letter, Dr Reddy referred to some of the inter-State projects, including the Lendi project, an inter-State project with Maharashtra, that envisages construction of a reservoir at Gonegaon village in Nanded district of Maharashtra.

After several rounds of negotiations with Maharashtra an inter-State agreement was concluded in 2003.

The project is aimed at developing by sharing the cost of the project.

The Maharashtra leg of the project is nearing completion and poised for commissioning by December.
