Autonomy to PSEs

This refers to ‘Give public sector cos autonomy to decide on staff salary’ (Business Line, August 24). The recommendation of the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE) to allow greater autonomy to the public s ector enterprises (PSEs) merits consideration by the government in the larger interest of the PSEs and the country. In the present circumstances, good performers do not feel attracted by the salary terms as non- performers enjoy equal footing with the performers. This tells upon the health of the PSEs vis-À-vis the competitive private sector which engages the best from the market. The public sector in fact loses the cream of the workforce. Any moderation in this field, sans perso nal discrimination would improve the public sector, which is the asset of the people. So, why such discrimination?
