Chennai, Aug. 27 G K Raman, former Managing Director of Sundaram Finance Ltd and a highly respected person in the general insurance and NBFC circles, passed away at Puttaparthi today. He was 76.

Born on September 9, 1931, Sri G.K. Raman had his school and college education in Madurai and thereafter at the Madras Law College. Beginning his career as a lawyer, he joined the Madras Motor and General Insurance Company Ltd. in 1958, which he served until its nationalisation in 1971. He thereafter moved to Sundaram Finance and served as the Managing Director of the company from 1995 to 2003. He was the first Chairman of Royal Sundaram Alliance Insurance Company, a position he held till his demise.

Mr Raman, with a booming voice and trademark smile that never left his face, rarely said anything negative, except about the rampant corruption in the insurance industry. “He was a man with an enormous energy and very deep insights into all aspects of motor vehicles insurance and financing,” notes Mr S. V. Mony, Secretary General, Life Council, IRDA, and former Chairman and Managing Director of General Insurance Corporation of India, Mr Raman’s close friend for over four decades.

Mr Raman will always be remembered for his seminal contribution to the birth and growth of the truck financing industry in India. Later, he was a key resource person to policy makers when the Indian insurance industry was being opened up.

Mr Raman is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
