Freight rebate for LPG wagons to go

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Aug. 28 Following a change in arrangement for maintenance of tank wagons, owned jointly by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd and Indian Railways, the Railways has decided to withdraw a four per cent freight rebate that it extends for such wagons used for transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

“As per the earlier arrangement, the cost for maintenance of wagons was to be borne by the Indian Oil Corporation, which is why the company was extended the freight rebate. But now, the Indian Railways would start maintaining the wagons,” official sources told Business Line adding that the move would be revenue-neutral. The rebate would be withdrawn with effect from October 1.

As it is, the decision to extend a freight rebate of four per cent for wagonload of LPG transportation, in jointly owned tank wagons by the oil industry and the railways, was taken for the period of October 1, 2006 to September 30, 2007. The decision to withdraw the discount in lieu of the Indian Railways taking on the responsibility of wagon maintenance was taken up while the issue was reviewed.
