Letters Political stand-offs vs market trends
‘Of political stand offs and opinion polls’ (Business Line, August 29) highlights the political undercurrents threatening to buffet the country. It is evident that the Left parties have slowly given up the idea of withdr awing support from the government. In fact, the inner-party conflicts faced by each party in the Left combination in supporting the UPA govt, just ‘to keep BJP out’ are understandable. It is also true that the Left is yet to gain something out of the arrangement, as the policies of UPA are in no way very different from those of the former NDA coalition. A parliament election now or at a future date may result in a disappointing picture for the Left grouping and such parties as the RJD and Samajvadi Party, whereas the Mayawatis may be the future front-runners who may be pleased to extend whole-hearted support to the Congress ministry led by Dr Manmohan Singh. It is also clear that the common man from villages has more trust in Dr Manmohan Singh for his straight-forward approach. With the country’s soaring energy needs unlikely to be met by a fixed combination of formula sources, hydel projects being thrown out of gear and the steep rise of naphtha and other petro-products, electrical energy is becoming costlier for the consumers and they are more interested in increasing the generation capacities and ensuring energy security rather than political games and the nitty-gritty of the India-US nuclear deal. The Left would be more benefited in continuing their support to the UPA till the expiry of this government’s term, as per their promise to the people. C. P. Velayudhan Nair Kochi
