Global certification service for diamond launched

IDL will provide three types of grading – full diamond certificate, compact and colour certificate.

Mumbai, Aug 29 International Diamond Laboratories (IDL), a diamond certification laboratory promoted by the Dubai Government, has launched its service in India.

IDL will provide global certification service for diamonds through technology developed by its research team. It aims to eliminate subjectivity in grading through technology and provide standardisation of diamond grades.

Inconsistency in diamond grading on an average can reach up to 25 per cent simply due to imperfections of the human eye, Mr Peter Meeus, CEO of IDL, told newspersons.

IDL will test the colour of the diamond through its in-house developed technology based on automated process.

The certificate will be available online, which will enable speedy trading of diamonds across the globe, said Mr Samit Bhatta, General Manager of IDL.

IDL’s Color Meter determines the precise colour value of a diamond aiming to provide scientific standards to diamond grading.

Types of grading

IDL will provide three types of grading – full diamond certificate, compact and colour certificate.

The cost can vary from $100 for complete grading to $9 for only colour grading of smaller diamonds.

The company has recently concluded a deal with Damas, which will exclusively market diamonds through IDL certificates.

In a year, some three million certificates are issued worldwide, excluding Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

With the expected penetration of synthetic diamonds, importance of certification of diamonds is to grow exponentially, said Mr Meeus.
